Tile Size Reference
Tile sizes for pixel art tilesets: standard dimensions, how tiles map to screen resolution, and transition tile counts for terrain edges.
Standard tile sizes
| Tile | Typical game | Viewport at 320×180 |
|---|---|---|
| 8×8 | Handheld-era, dense maps | 40×22 tiles |
| 16×16 | The most common default | 20×11 tiles |
| 32×32 | Modern pixel games | 10×5.6 tiles |
| 64×64 | Large-scale overworlds | 5×2.8 tiles |
Transition tiles (terrain edges)
| Set | Tile count | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal | 5 | Base + 4 straight edges |
| Common | 13 | + 4 outer corners + 4 inner corners |
| Full blob | 47 | Every adjacency combination |
Tile size must divide the viewport cleanly or edges will seam.
Build the 13-tile subset first; expand to 47 only when your map editor needs it.

How to Make Pixel Art Tilesets
Build tilesets that tile: edge-safe grass, seamless textures, corner and transition tiles, and the grid discipline that keeps maps assembly-clean.
