How to Make Pixel Art Tilesets
Build tilesets that tile: edge-safe grass, seamless textures, corner and transition tiles, and the grid discipline that keeps maps assembly-clean.
Quick answer
A tile is a texture that must survive being repeated. Design within a safe margin (no features touching edges unless they are meant to continue), keep the palette global, and build the 47-tile transition set only after the base tile repeats cleanly.
The seam test
A base tile fails if you can spot the grid. Draw it, place it 3×3, and look for: edge lines, corner clusters, and directional texture (grass strokes all leaning one way). Fix by moving edge features inward or making edge pixels continue the pattern on both sides.
- 1
Lock the size and palette
16×16 or 32×32, from the game's global palette. Tiles share colors with everything else — a tileset is a system, not a set of drawings.
- 2
Fill the middle
Draw texture in the center, keeping a 1–2px margin at edges empty or uniform. Texture that touches an edge must visually continue into the neighboring tile.
- 3
Treat the edges as wrap-around
Whatever crosses the left edge must re-enter on the right at the same height. Mentally (or literally) tile the tile next to itself while drawing.
- 4
Break repetition deliberately
Seams gone? Now make 2–3 variants with small differences (a pebble, a tuft) so maps don't show obvious wallpaper patterns.
Transitions between terrains
Where grass meets water or dirt, you need transition tiles. The full 47-tile blob set covers every combination; most games start with a 13-tile subset (4 edges, 4 inner corners, 4 outer corners, 1 center) and add the rest only when maps demand them.
| Tile | Count | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Base fill | 1–3 | Open areas |
| Straight edges | 4 | Grass→water borders, one per side |
| Outer corners | 4 | Convex transition corners |
| Inner corners | 4 | Concave corners |
| Full set | 47 | Every adjacency, for map editors |
Put it to work
Common mistakes
- Drawing tiles as standalone illustrations — edges fight each other in the map.
- Per-tile palette drift: 'slightly different greens' accumulate into a patchwork map.
- Building all 47 transition tiles before testing that the base tile repeats cleanly.
