Clean edges, alpha and palettes
The editor habits that separate an asset from a drawing: hard edges, honest alpha, and a palette you control.
You finish with
A sprite with clean outlines, correct transparency and a palette extracted from itself.
01What you will learn
- Keep edge pixels intentional and connected.
- Separate transparent pixels from background paint.
- Check the palette and silhouette at the sprite's actual size.
Start with: A sprite in your Workspace or an image to import. Finish the first asset course if you need a starting project.

What gets in the way
Floating pixels, near-identical colors and a painted background make an otherwise readable sprite difficult to reuse.
The useful change
Remove the strays, use a small set of purposeful colors, and keep the surrounding pixels transparent. Check the exported image on a contrasting background.
03Follow the steps
- 1
Work with an indexed palette, not a color picker
Extract a small palette from artwork you imported, then use those swatches for your edits. Pixels store their own colors: changing a swatch does not recolor the whole image. Use fill or the pencil to apply your chosen color to the artwork.

Use alpha as a tool, not a mistake
The color field accepts #RRGGBBAA, so soft shadows and glass can use partial transparency in a PNG. GIF only has one transparent palette entry and cannot preserve partial alpha; use PNG when intermediate opacity matters.
- 3
Check fairness at 1× zoom
Zoom out regularly. Highlights that read beautifully at 800% usually collapse into noise at 100%, which is the only zoom your game uses.
The status bar always shows save status — the autosave runs 800 ms after you stop drawing.
- 4
Finish with transparency, not a background color
Erase everything outside the silhouette. A transparent background survives every engine, theme and background layer; a painted one does not.
