How to Draw Pixel Art Items
Draw readable pixel art items and pickups: one-silhouette design, material ramps at 16×16, and the readability tricks that make small objects pop.
Quick answer
Items win with one readable silhouette and one material ramp: pick a single recognizable outline, 2–3 ramp colors on the main material, one accent — and let the background checkerboard do the separating.
One silhouette, one idea
Items are read at a glance from an inventory or the ground, so each one gets exactly one idea: a potion is 'bottle with cork', a key is 'loop with shaft'. If you need two ideas (a sword with a gem AND a ribbon), the shape turns to mush at 16×16. Draw the outline of the idea first and only then decide if there is pixel budget left for anything else.
| Item | The one idea | Typical colors |
|---|---|---|
| Health potion | Bottle + cork + liquid level | 4–5 |
| Key | Loop + shaft + 2 teeth | 3–4 |
| Coin | Circle + inner ring | 4–5 |
| Scroll | Roll + paper + band | 4–5 |
| Gem | Faceted octagon | 4–6 |
Drawing steps
- 1
Block the outline
In the darkest color, draw the item's outer shape. Test it at display size — if you cannot name the item from the outline alone, simplify.
- 2
Fill the main material
One flat base color for the primary material — glass, wood, metal. Items usually have exactly one.
- 3
Add the light story
A shadow step on the lower side and a small highlight cluster top-left. Items are small: 60% of pixels stay in the base color.
Transparent items (potions, gems) get a white glint early — glass reads through its glint.
- 4
One accent maximum
A gem, a label, a rune — one secondary color, 10–15% of the area. More accents compete with the silhouette.
Put it to work
Common mistakes
- Two competing ideas in one 16×16 outline.
- Shading subtlety on a 12-pixel object — items need contrast, not gradients.
- Forgetting the transparent-background check: items sit on the checkerboard in inventories, so dark colors must still separate.
